Welcome to the Language Learning Channel

Welcome to Bright Hub’s Language Learning channel. If you know Bright Hub’s product reviews and have read the profiles of our experts, you know that you can rely on the quality of our opinions when deciding how and where to spend your money.

In this channel, there are white papers and articles, links to other pages in Bright Hub or external websites dealing with a range of fields circumscribed by teaching, learning and using foreign languages. Content is intended for administrators, educators of K-12 students, and the parents of K-12 students studying in different settings.

The Language Learning channel also contains articles addressing the concerns of similar audiences at the college and university level. For this audience, study abroad is often a component of their foreign-language studies, often a required one. Besides exploring what types of programs are “out there,” and what to consider when selecting one, our articles deal with the concerns of educators and administrators, covering such topics as the creation, accrediting, management, operating and financing of overseas programs.  Independent, adult and life-long learners also can find an abundance of resources to help them select brick-and-mortar programs in the US or abroad, print materials and software programs, many of which have been reviewed in Bright Hub and have links provided in the reviews so readers may purchase them.

For those who already speak a foreign language, there are articles dealing with the various ways in which various professions use foreign languages, translation and interpreting being among the most apparent, but not the only ones, as readers will be glad to discover. Under the field of translation, technical and literary texts are addressed, both for translation professionals and also for anyone who finds him or herself needing of their services and wondering what they need to know before proceeding. Articles for clients, translation agencies and translators (independent contractors, in-house translators) examine the pitfalls of negotiating a translation job.

Articles about literary translation are more philosophical in nature, but contain good observations about the craft. Recommendations for further reading about translation as a craft and reviews of translations of literature are also offered.

The Language Learning channel is a storehouse of advice, observations, evaluations and encouragement to professionals who teach and those who study or use humankind’s oldest tool. Our articles are authoritative. Readers need not sift through reviews by people who are “merely” consumers. We do not write to experts, neither do we dumb down our language. We welcome people interested in languages and their uses and show our respect for your interest by straight talk.
